House Bill Number 568

"Pit Bull Extermination Bill"

On May 19, 2008, House Bill 568 (the "Bill") was introduced into the Ohio House of Representatives.  The Sponsor of the Bill is Representative Tyrone Yates (D).

The Bill was introduced to amend Section 955.11 of the Ohio Revised Code ("ORC") and to enact ORC Section 955.111 to prohibit the owning, keeping, or harboring of pit bull dogs beginning ninety days after the effective date of the act and to require specified officers to seize all pit bull dogs after that date.

On May 20, 2008, the Bill was referred to House Committee on State Government and Elections (the "Committee").

After all testimony has been considered, the Committee can (i) report the Bill without changes, (ii) amend the Bill and then report it, (iii) prepare a substitute Bill, or (iv) indefinitely postpone action, which effectively kills the proposal for the remainder of the legislative session.  If the Committee reports the Bill favorably to the Rules and Reference Committee, then such committee determines whether the Bill should be considered for passage by the entire House and on what date.

Thereafter, the Bill must be approved by the House and the Senate and be signed by the Governor.   To learn more about how a bill becomes a law, Click Here.
